You Can Make a Big Impact by Attending School Board Meetings

Did you know that school board meetings are where parents can make the biggest difference in their child’s education? School board meetings are where many of the real decisions about your child’s education are made.

School boards decide how your taxpayer dollars are spent on student’s education. They vote on many policies that shape your child’s school, including what textbooks to use, what the dress code should allow, and whether to open new schools or close underperforming or outdated schools. Perhaps most importantly, school boards select the district’s superintendent.

So, how do you attend a school board meeting? It differs by school district, but most boards require you to register ahead of time. They can also restrict the number of speakers and the time you have to speak. So be prepared. Do your research on the issue and your school board members, and enlist other concerned parents to speak as well.
